Piracetam is the original nootropic and father of the racetam group of nootropics. First synthesized in 1964 by Dr. Corneliu E. Giurgea, piracetam is the oldest, most studied and most popular of the nootropics.

Piracetam has been a popular choice as a nootropic to enhance cognitive thinking for many years and its ability to enhance memory and learning is well-documented.

Benefits and Effects of Piracetam Supplement

While piracetam is the parent of all other racetams and has been around the longest, it is also the weakest. While many people still take piracetam as a cognitive enhancer, its main benefit may actually be as a longevity enhancer.

Piracetam works as a neuro-protectant and has been used to help treat patients with Alzheimer’s, where it does appear to provide cognitive benefits as well.

It also helps to protect the brain against age-related decline as well.

Research and clinical studies suggest that piracetam provides mood enhancement against stress and as a treatment for depression.

The maximum effective dosage of piracetam is 4,800mg per day, usually taken in three 1,600mg doses taken throughout the day.

While some effects may be felt on the first dose, the full effects of piracetam are not felt until after taking daily for seven to ten days.

Even though it is one of the safest nootropics on the market and is not toxic, it’s not recommended that you take more than the maximum effective dosage as there appears to be no additional benefit at higher doses.

When you first start taking piracetam, it’s also recommended that you start with a smaller dose and build up over a few days.

Side Effects

Piracetam is considered to be relatively safe and is well-tolerated, even at higher doses.

The most common side effect reported is headaches, which can easily be avoided by taking a choline supplement like Alpha GPC or CDP choline.

Other common side effects reported include: diarrhea, weight gain, drowsiness, insomnia, nervousness, depression, muscle spasm, hyperactivity.

Piracetam does very well on its own to boost cognitive functions but can be stacked with other nootropics to attain maximum results.

Whenever taking a racetam, it’s recommended that you take a choline supplement as well.

Choline will not only maximize the effects of the racetam, but it will also help decrease the chances of developing a headache, which is common with racetams.

Try a stack of 1,600mg piracetam and 300mg GPC Choline one to three times a day.

Piracetam is commonly stacked with other racetams. For a greater mood-related benefit, stack piracetam with aniracetam.

Try a stack of 2,000mg piracetam, 500mg aniracetam and 300mg GPC Choline once or twice a day.

Piracetam stacks well with aniracetam, oxiracetam, phenylpiracetam, centrophenoxine and Alpha GPC or CDP choline.

Overview of Piracetam the original Racetam

Piracetam is one of the most popular of all the nootropics. It is an excellent choice for a beginner to take on its own. And yet, it’s versatile enough for advanced users to include in stacks.

There has been plenty of research to back the claims for its cognitive benefits.
